Happy Giveaway Day!




Hello There!

Don't you love Giveaway Day? It's almost better than Christmas, so I'll cut to the chase.


~ I don't blog much, but I always have hope of getting better.
~ I opened an Etsy store, Made By Little Crickets, six weeks ago. I make clothes for kids and doll accessories. Here is what I have learned: running an Etsy store is a lot harder than I imagined.
~Here is what I'm asking you to do. Give me advice. If you have a shop of your own, tell me what works for you. If you don't, tell me what you like about other shops. What makes a shop a favorite of yours, or what makes you want to make a purchase at a shop? You will only be entered into the giveaway if you make some sort of comment about my store or Etsy stores in general or any other vaguely shop related comment. All others comments will be deleted. I am really serious about this, this time.

Here is my store Facebook page. I usually post when I put something new in the shop, or when I have a new design. So you won't be getting junk from me every day. I just want it to be a good way for people to see the new stuff I've added in my shop without having to go over there.
I am enthusiastically inventing, and I have new stuff going in the shop regularly. Someone asked if I could make a wipes case, so I did. Someone asked for a changing pad, so I made one. If you want something you don't see? That's my favorite part. I love designing little things.

I will randomly choose a winner with the generator and send your package out by the designated time. Likely Saturday morning. I will ship overseas, but your package might be a wee bit smaller if I do. I will randomly generate a name and post the winner Saturday morning after my girls jiu jitsu class - about 11am EST. I will then proceed posthaste to the post office. Or maybe I'll do that in reverse. I'll figure out the details eventually.

  2. Very cute shop! Love the Kyoko set!

    My advise (I've been selling on Etsy since 2006 or so in various storefronts) is to list something as often as you can. Seriously. It seems I only sell things if I'm either renewing expired items or listing new items or renewing sold items. If I don't do anything for weeks, I don't sell a single thing. At least this is how it's been for me!

    I admire you for having a store. The first thing that I like to see if variety. If I'm going to buy something - I guess I want choices and a few of them. Different colors, different sizes, and for sure different patterns. For the listings that are the same items, use different photos - makes your inventory look larger.

    You have a great selection and anyone would be super smart to buy from you!

  5. At what age do girls want to do the baby doll thing? Mine are 3 and don't seem interested... but I ADORE your baby doll accessories! Especially the wipes bag :)

  6. I agree--running an Etsy store is hard work! I sold handmade cards on Etsy a few years back then decided it wasn't worth all the work to try and sell a $3 card. My advice is to list new items often, use descriptive (and appropriate) tags so people find you in searches, post good pictures and use all the picture spots, and promote, promote, promote. I think the Facebook page is a great idea. My advice probably isn't all that helpful. Best of luck with your shop!

  8. Congrats on opening your shop! I know how exciting (and overwhelming!) that can be! My best advice, is keep it enjoyable! Make what you enjoy making in a timeline that is enjoyable for you. Don't feel guilty if you have to say no to a customers request. Keep in mind that people who don't sew, often have no idea how time consuming projects can be (or how expensive crafting really can be) - which leads to pricing. Be sure to price your work fairly; I know it can be difficult to put a price value on your time - but it is essential when running a handmade business. You also want to find a marketplace that works best for you - Etsy, Hyena Cart, and Big Cartel are all popular sites. I started on Etsy, left and ran my shop through Big Cartel for a year, then came back to Etsy. There were a lot of variables that went into my decision to leave (and then to return) to Etsy.   9. DONT STRESS!!! Some times you may go weeks or even months without a sale, and then at other times, you could be bombarded with them. Just don't stress about it. I look at Etsy like a self promoting craft fair. As long as you look at it that way, that it's just this extra little source of fun, then you'll do great.

  10. You need to find a way to get your items seen by lots of people. I would suggest finding some Facebook pages or blogs that host giveaways. It will cost you a little bit upfront (giving a free item away or something) but will hopefully get your name out there for more people to check out your store.   11. I really appreciate good photography of the products, and also fast updates on restocking. Always squeal a little if a very small little free gift shows up too... sticker, tea bag, chocolate bite, shows up in my order!

  14. Thanks for the giveaway! I'm attracted to shops where the product not only looks professional, but still has that unique boutique look. Bright fun colors mixed and matched, that still look trendy. Things for girls should have girly accents like bows, but still be structured a bit to give contrast. Nice professional pictures also help. A crisp white background, like in your shop, and extra photo(s) that show the detail available. Good luck!

I dig shops that offer full descriptions - I want sizes, materials, washing instructions (if applicable), etc. Also, if you're going to say you ship to the continental US, be sure you know what that means! Continental US includes Alaska, it's the contiguous US that drops Alaska. We are on the same continent as the rest of the US!!! And, I like the truly continental US shippers :)

  17. Hi. I do love the title of your shop. My favorite shops make it easy to find what I'm looking - good category listings and things like that. Also, really work your Facebook page. Use it not only to highlight your beautiful creations, but also to create your brand. Share both your products and what's important to you with your followers. They, in turn, will share with their friends and that's how you grow. Good luck!

  18. My advice to you is to really work your Facebook page. Use it as a way to share not just your beautiful creations, but also yourself with your followers. Building a brand is the key to driving your sales. Think about the brands you follow and which posts you enjoy the most. Then embody those things you love about them. Hope that makes sense.

  20. Congrats on your new shop. I haven't sold on Etsy for a few years now, but I've found having a lot of variety to offer is good. So in your case, having the hoodie dress (which is awesome by the way!) in various sizes and fabrics. Good luck!

  22. I have tried to sell so many times but just never was able to make it work. But what always bugged me about online stores for personal use( like yours, not bigger commercial places) was if they over exaggerate the shipping charges. I know (from my own experience) it doesnt' cost that much to ship the item. It seems to me they are just "hiding" something. I'd much rather see the exact price and actual shipping. To me..that just tells me that that owner is honest and decent and can be trusted. I have shopped on Ebay and if that shipping isn't reasonable...I just dont' buy. THese days with USPS priority at abut $6 for the envelope and $10 for the large box, weight not an issue, that is the best way to go...and good service from USPS on their own apckages and the packages are free! I dont' have to buy boxes etc. Good luck and I will take a visit!

  23. I agree, having an etsy shop is harder than it seems. I have all sorts of pipe dreams and ideas in my head.

    I've found that grouping my things by category in my shop has helped. Maximizing key words when describing too.

    But the most helpful thing I've realized is that I actually need to make things to sell them! They can't just be in my head. :D

    That and my daughter tries to steal all my makings....

    my advice is to make as many 'connections' with bloggers and other etsy shop owners as you can. do giveaways. collaborate with someone and sell your items as a set; that way their customers see your work and vice versa.

  25. You have lovely items in your shop! A couple of things that are important to me when shopping on Etsy: I like to see the exact item I'm buying, unless I'm getting something custom, and I like sellers to respond to any questions I have or my order promptly.

  28. i don't have a shop, but what i like best about other people's shops is.. variety! i like seeing different colours, styles, patterns. nothing TOO girly or boyish.. things that can be gender neutral as well! good luck with your shop!

    Marketing your items is important to making sales. Not familiar with Etsy so can’t compare, but exposure on sites that offer reasonable rates to you, the seller so you can offer reasonable pricing to your buyers, along with good photos, clear concise descriptions and variety of items.

  33. I love shops that are really well organized. I do not want to have to browse more than 3 or 4 pages per category. Also, I really like when the shop owner bio shares fun info.   34. Looking at your photos it looks like you understand the need for good photos. You should find a way to get more natural light reflected onto your items. Photos taken near the window with reflector boards. Also the more circles you join or shops you follow your name gets out there.

  39. Hmm... I wish I knew! (And your poop cracks me up.) I've had one sale - an apron - and I guess she found me through a tag search, because it was made out of a sari. So likely put tags that you think people will search by - if you look at how other successful people do it, the tags will be (just like on ebay) misspellings or alternate spellings (plurals etc.) of each other, or words like "purple"... Otherwise, listing something new can make you show up on browsing pages for impulse buyers. And I've bought from shops during the giveaway day, when what they had was cheap and I *really* wanted to win it, so figured I may as well buy it instead! You don't seem overpriced. I'll come back when my baby's older and I know what she's interested in!

  44. I don't have a shop but I do have a friend with an Etsy and she finds that she needs to be Blogging and Facebooking as well as sewing and selling to get her brand out there and have people waiting for her next creation.
    I love the matching little girl and doll dresses. A lovely point of difference in your shop.

  46. You have a gorgeous shop with unique items. I have an etsy shop (http://www.etsy.com/shop/ananemone); it's not all that successful, but I've been around a while, and here is my advice:
    1. You need a bit more light in your photos, and possibly a crisper background. Try a large sheet of cardstock, maybe. Also, you might make more sales if you have your items modeled on a doll or a kid or both.
    2. Your titles and tags aren't bad but they aren't great. Etsy operates both the Search and the Browse now on a relevancy algorithm; you want to match keyword phrases in your title and tags. Search the Forums for advice.

  47. Your shop is cute! I just opened a shop recently and am working on making it better as well. I think pictures are key (and something I need to work on). I just really like that you used both copious and posthaste in one post-those words should be used much more :) What I really appreciate about stores on Etsy are really clear, well lit photos that have accurate colors. If photos are dark it is not only difficult to see what they're selling, it doesn't represent the item correctly. There's my two cents.

  52. I like shops with pretty pictures for their items, and people that don't post various labels just to get seen. If I am in the market for something specific, I will choose between two stores, the one that has better information for me, or has better customer service. I try and always email an etsy shop to see how their customer service is.

When I'm shopping I want to find things easily, small print to be easy to understand, pictures to be clear and show me a good view of the product. If appropriate I would like an inside view also. I also like dimensions to be included if the size is important, say a handbag.

  55. It is hard! I have an etsy shop, which is currently on haitus, so maybe I am not the best person to ask for advice. But, I think if you can find a few things that sell well, and then try really hard to get the word out about those things, that would be good. I was always trying out new things for my shop, and so I didn't really have a 'speciality'. I think that was my downfall (or one of them). Your stuff is really cute!

  58. I don't sell much, but I have an Instagram account with a lot of friends. They were always pushing me to sell stuff and now when I put something up to sell it nearly always gets sold within minutes. Be active, update your store often, connect with people on social networks. I know that personally, I impulse buy if I am on facebook and something comes up in my feed that I like :)

  62. I think your photos could be a little more pleasing to the eyes... not that they are bad... Maybe shots outside with a little color so that the white background doesn't wash out the color in all of the pretty fabrics you are using! I also love making crafts/clothes/quilts/etc. just for the sake of making them, have you ever considered creating patterns for some of your clothing items and selling them?   65. I dont have a shop but I do shop on etsy. A LOT.... Good clear pics are a must for me and I like when there are photos of different angles of the piece too. No outrageous shipping prices, i have passed up things that i would have otherwise bought because shipping was more than it should have been. Coupons and sales are a good way to get people, everyone loves a deal. Fast shipping, I have had some orders take over a month to get out the door which means i wont be ordering from them again, and good product descriptions are great, i want to know exactly what i am getting, mesurements are a must too. hope that helps

  67. I love to see pictures. LOTS of pictures. Front, back, side, on, off, in action, etc. Also, I think you can add an etsy shop (button) to your facebook page. And this might be kind of weird, but there is NOTHING I love more than free shipping. If your price is a couple of bucks more than another stores, but you have free shipping I'll pick yours 90% off the time. So low or no shipping costs are huge for me. Good luck!

  68. Your shop looks great and I love your stuff! I have an etsy shop and I have been on there since 2006, but I have only sold one item. I am very impatient and end up giving most of my items as gifts and deleting them from etsy. The people I know who do sell their items just keep at it and are more patient. They also promote their shop and items a lot more than I do, so I'd say the facebook page is a good idea. It is good to join a team and get your items into treasuries, so they are seen by more people too.

    My biggest advice would just be to work on getting more items in your shop over time. The more items you have, the more chances you have to be seen.

  73. I don't have a shop but I do shop on etsy often. I think it's really important to have more than one picture of each item, especially of the item next to other objects to give an idea of the scale. Also, outrageous shipping is a huge turn off. I usually ask a question from the seller before I buy and if the response isn't within 24 hours I won't buy because I worry the item will take a long time to get to me. Good luck!!

  79. I used to have a shop for handmade items & I figured out that the process was the most efficient if I made a lot of the same item. That way I could make one, photograph it, list it, and then just keep relisting it. Before I was making one item, taking a picture, listing it, and then once it sold I had to do everything all over again.

I like your products and think maybe you should carry 18 inch doll panties since I know my daughters have the 18 inch dolls and they would like panties instead of diapers.   81. I have been running an etsy shop for about 1.5 years and yes it is harder then I thought, but I love it. My first thoughts are...don't let things build up quickly get orders out (or as quickly as possible), put your shop on 'vacation' if it is just not good to have orders at the time or you are overwhelmed. Plan...with 4 kids I have to plan well my time in my shop and all the other mommy 'chores' I have. There is my two cents..good luck!

  83. One of the main thing I look for is reasonable shipping. For instance I ordered some fabric from an etsy shop and she charged me $8.50 for shipping 3 yards of fabric and then sent it parcel post. 3 yards easily fits into a flat rate box and it wouldn't have taken a week and a half to get to me. I was not a happy camper. I appreciate when a shop offers combined shipping and I also appreciate a refund on the difference if it can be shipped cheaper. I have had several shops refund a couple of dollars because they could put it in a flat rate box.

  84. I don't have a shop but the thing that makes or breaks a sell for me or even time on a page are the photos. And since American girl dolls are in is there a way you can advertise your doll clothes on one of these dolls? And have you thought about making doll shoes?

  85. Usually how I find up on Etsy is when another retailer that I normally go to doesn't have a specific item that I'm looking for. Honestly, I hate when I see people charging an arm and a leg for shipping. I'd rather that be built in to the price of the item. Shipping costs steer alot of people's willingness to buy an item. Blogging, having a newsletter with special sales, etc will increase your visibility and traffic. See if you can contact a blogger that receives alot of traffic to do a giveaway to generate traffic to your site. Good luck!

    I love the wording you used in describing them too. Something that I look for when online shopping is the word "sale". It always drew me in.

    What I like on Etsy shops is clear photos so I can see what I'm going to buy, and the possibility to personalize the items.
    If it's possible to combine shipping and much cheaper, it really calls me.

  88. You have cute items in your shop! When I shop for clothes I like to see them on a model, which I know is hard if you don't have a model readily available. I also sell on Etsy, bags and purses, and really I think it's mostly about the photo. That first photo has to catch the eye in a sea of other shops items.   91. I don't have a shop, but I do know that the shops I love most have one thing in common. They have great photos of their items. Bright and clear so I know exactly what I'm getting. Take great photos and it will make a difference. Thanks!

  92. I agree with all the other people who are saying you should have permanent links on your other social media outlets. Merge your branding and use your other traffic to your advantage. Also, check out The Bump in your area. They offer ad space for local shops and artists. As for the Etsy in general, a nice, clean atmosphere usually draws me in. Pictures are very important and your banner should look good and be versatile enough to use on your blog and FB. Again, merge your brand!

  95. How brave you are! I find I return to an Etsy (or like) store because of fair shipping, quick service -or at least details about how and when one ships-we all have a life. :) Also, courteous correspondence is very important to me.

  98. I like stores that have good pictures and full descriptions of the item. Personally I love your wipes idea - my daughter is constantly pulling real (read: expensive!) wipes out for play. I also love the matching dress idea

  99. Photos are key, of course. Also descriptions can really sell items. Write yourself notes about features (what does your item have that's helpful/special) and benefits (what does having that feature do for the buyer). Then form your descriptions from those notes.

  102. Great items. The things that came to mind are make sure your descriptions have as much as they can to hit ppl's queries. Also add the option of different colors for an outfit, as not all people are plum fans, for example. Good luck and Merry Christmas.
